Irrigation Systems — Why They're Worth the Investment
Coffee needs sufficient, consistent water from planting through to a mature, bearing tree. Rainfall alone doesn't always deliver that consistently — which is why irrigation is one of the highest-return investments a coffee farmer can make.
How Irrigation Improves Yield
- Can increase production by up to 50% or more, especially in below-normal rainfall years.
- Increases bean size, raising the proportion of premium-grade coffee in every harvest.
- Induces uniform flowering, so harvest is easier to plan and manage across the farm.
- Protects the tree during drought and enables continuous vegetative growth rather than stalling in dry spells.
A good soaking of around 25mm every 14 days (roughly 20 litres, or one jerrycan, per plant) is enough to stimulate flowering and sustain fruit formation during dry periods. Without adequate, sustained moisture, flowering can extend messily over many months instead of happening as a manageable, predictable flush — making harvesting harder and more costly.

Water immediately before and after planting, then intensify watering during dry spells — this single habit protects more of a coffee investment than almost any other. Resource-constrained farms can start with simple bottle-drip irrigation at each tree.
Common Irrigation Systems
- Drip irrigation — the most water-efficient system; delivers water straight to the root zone through drip lines with evenly spaced openings, minimising waste.
- Overhead / sprinkler — suits uneven ground, but uses more water than drip systems.
- Basin, under-tree and simple bottle irrigation — lower-cost options that work well for smaller farms or as a starting point before scaling up.
Kakone Farm Irrigation
On our own Mubende farm, we run a solar-powered irrigation intake, drawing from an on-farm water source to power drip irrigation across our coffee blocks — cutting running costs and building resilience against shifting rainfall patterns.
